My experience with the MyStrom Wifi Switch

My experience with the MyStrom Wifi Switch

I have been using the MyStrom Wifi Switch r for a year and more now. In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about this important smart home component and my experience with the MyStrom Wifi Switch. Already in the introduction I reveal the best and worst feature:

  • Positive: Very quickly ready for use and equipped with a good app
  • Negative: The wifi sockets are and remain a bit clunky and are more suitable for hidden use

First impression

The Wifi Switches from MyStrom come nicely packaged and is compact compared to other products with the same functionality. However, the Wifi Switch is still quite large and eye-catching. Of course, also because of the color elements.

Good feature set, but quite clunky!

Design

The design is always such a thing: In principle, for me, the less flashy, the better! That hasn’t quite been achieved here. On the one hand, this is due to the green color elements mentioned above. On the other hand, however, still large scope of the wifi switch. So rather something for hidden cans.

Installation

The installation is done very quickly and easily:

  • Download the MyStrom App
  • “Add Device”
  • Plug in the Wifi Switch to the desired outlet (Red flashing).
  • Press the WPS button on the WLAN router
  • Press and hold the “+” button on the Wifi Switch for 2 seconds (White flashing)

After 1-2 minutes, the MyStrom Wifi Switch should be connected to the WLAN and thus also available in the app. The integration into Home Assistant is then (actually) also quite simple and quickly done. Because this did not work for me with the instructions and a small adjustment is necessary, I will describe this in a separate post.

Functionality

The MyStrom Wifi Switch does what it has to do: turn power on and off. But in addition, it measures the temperature and power consumption.

Besides the hardware-related functionalities, the good app and the many control options, including the keyboard, are especially important. Automations to mention. Practically anything is possible there:

  • A simple schedule (on / off at specific times)
  • Switching after sunrise or sunset
  • A vacation mode
  • Switch off when power consumption falls below a limit
  • Alarms, timers, etc.

Conclusion

My experience with the MyStrom Wifi Switch has been positive throughout, which is why I can recommend it without reservation. These were also my first smart home components, which I bought and accordingly they were in use at the beginning without Home Assistant. That’s why I used the app intensively and was very satisfied with it. Since it finally worked out with the integration in Home Assistant, I no longer need the app.

Addendum: Since late 2020 / early 2021, there is a new version with direct Homekit integration.
