My experience with the Xiaomi window sensor

I have been using the Xiaomi window sensor (can of course also be used as a door sensor) for several months now and am happy to share my experiences.

First impression

Ohh, he’s small! After the first use then comes the following: “…but oho!”. And in the end, it simply does exactly what it is supposed to do: It reports the opening or closing of the door very reliably! Since I procure as far as possible all components on Zigbee protocol basis, I can integrate it quite simply and fast into my existing network and create the first automations!

Can be mounted very inconspicuously and works flawlessly!

Design

The design is chosen unobtrusive and simple, so it can be placed on the top, bottom or side of the window or door. Of course, it falls visibly, but it absolutely does not bother. Even my style-savvy partner and interior decorator in our house, was positively taken.

Installation

The window sensor from Xiaomi uses the Zigbee protocol and can thus be easily and quickly integrated into many Zigbee-based systems.

The installation is done within a few minutes. First, the assembly takes place at the desired location: the larger part is glued to the frame and then stick the small counterpart and that’s it.

The integration into Home Assistant is then (as with the motion detector) very easily and quickly done:

  • Set the Conbee II in the detection mode
  • Press the small button on the side of the window sensor once and the one blue LED will start flashing
  • Within 3 seconds the window sensor is detected and can be used directly

Functionality

The motion detector displays 2 sensors:

  • Open / Closed status
  • Battery sensor

Opening and closing is detected very quickly and reliably transmitted to Home Assistant. Thus, an action can also be executed in a timely manner. The quick response is very important because then, for example, when I open the door, I can directly turn on the light at the entrance. Or, of course, in the security area: there it is of no use if the message is only reported 10 seconds after opening.

The motion detector is currently 4 months in use with me and the battery still has 85% capacity. I will give you an update later on how the battery consumption is developing. I expect the battery to last easily over a year.

Conclusion

My experience with the Xiaomi window sensor has been positive throughout. I can only recommend it. In terms of functionality, everything a motion detector must be able to do is available. And then the price for the Xiaomi components comes into play again: Unbeatable! Why this is important, I have described here ! Then I just end up really struggling why a sensor from Hue costs CHF / EUR 50. And absolutely no understanding that the well-known smart home providers then take again significantly more! Which window sensors do you use?
